Sung Dong Il
Sung Dong‑il (성동일) was born on April 27, 1967, in Incheon, South Korea. He earned a degree in Mechanical Design from Yuhan University. His passion for acting led him to join theater in 1987 and later enter the 1991 SBS open talent auditions. He first gained notice in TV with the comic “Red Socks” character but avoided typecasting by diversifying into varied roles—from chaebol sons to professors. His breakthrough film came with 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), and since then he’s been a dependable supporting actor in many successful films and series.
Career highlights:
Sung has built a prolific career spanning theater, television, and film. After early comic roles, he starred in 200 Pounds Beauty, then delivered memorable performances in Take Off, Foxy Festival, Children…, The Suicide Forecast, The Client, The Slave Hunters, and the beloved Reply trilogy (Reply 1997/1994/1988). Beyond this, he has featured in numerous TV dramas like Hwarang (playing Lord Kim Wi‑hwa), Hospital Playlist, Prison Playbook, Miss Hammurabi, Ghost Doctor, Jirisan, and many more. His versatility—from comedic charm to dramatic depth—has cemented his status as one of Korea’s most reliable and beloved character actors.
