Nitin Chandra Ganatra was born on 30 June 1967 in Kenya into a family originally from Gujarat, India. His early years were spent in Kenya until his family moved to Coventry, UK in 1971 when he was around three years old. He attended Coundon Court School followed by Drama, Film & Television studies at the University of Bristol, and further honed his craft under theatre pioneer Jerzy Grotowski.

Nitin Ganatra’s acting journey spans over 30 years and includes a rich mix of TV, film, and voice work. He rose to mainstream acclaim as Masood Ahmed in the BBC soap EastEnders (2007–2019), appearing in over 760 episodes. His portrayal, alongside Nina Wadia, won the Best On‑Screen Partnership at the 2009 British Soap Awards and earned him a nomination for Best Actor in 2010. He also led in the Channel 4 sitcom Mumbai Calling and featured in prestige films: as Prince Pondicherry in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Kohli Saab in Bride & Prejudice, and Haroun in The Mistress of Spices. TV credits include The Worst Witch, The State, The Essex Serpent, and he appeared as Dr. Anwar in Netflix’s Wednesday in 2022. In 2022, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.
