Go Ara (Hangul: 고아라), born on February 11, 1990, in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, is a South Korean actress and model known for her captivating beauty and strong screen presence. She spent much of her early life moving around due to her father's career in the military, which helped her develop an adaptable personality and a wide perspective from a young age. Ara attended Chung-Ang University, majoring in Theater and Film, which is renowned for producing many successful Korean actors. Her entry into the entertainment industry began when she won the SM Entertainment Teen Model Contest in 2003, at the age of 13. Her unique charm and distinct Eurasian features (due to being of pure Korean descent but having large eyes often mistaken for mixed heritage) quickly drew public attention and landed her early roles in television. Over time, Go Ara developed her acting through challenging roles in period dramas, romantic comedies, and youth-centric stories, proving her versatility.
Career highlights:
Go Ara made her acting debut in 2003 with the KBS teen drama Sharp #1, gaining popularity among younger audiences. However, her real breakthrough came with the historical youth drama “Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth” (2016–2017), where she played Ah Ro, a half-commoner and half-noblewoman who becomes entangled in royal politics and a love triangle involving two of the main characters. Her performance in Hwarang showcased her emotional depth and ability to hold her own among a cast of popular male leads like Park Seo-joon, Park Hyung-sik, and BTS’s V. She also starred in other critically acclaimed works such as Reply 1994 (2013), where her portrayal of Sung Na-jung earned her immense praise for depicting a nostalgic and relatable youth. Her role in Black (2017), a fantasy thriller, marked a departure from her usual romantic or comedic roles, allowing her to demonstrate a darker and more complex range. Over the years, she has worked with major broadcasters like KBS, SBS, and OCN, steadily building a reputation for taking on diverse roles in both period and contemporary dramas.
