Alfred Gough

writer

Alfred Fabian Gough III is an accomplished American screenwriter, producer, director, showrunner, and creator. After graduating from St. Mary’s Ryken High School (1985), he earned his bachelor’s degree at The Catholic University of America (1989), then attended the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where he met his creative partner Miles Millar. They sold their first script, Mango, while still at USC, launching their careers. Gough and Millar went on to co-create several major TV series—including Smallville, Into the Badlands, The Shannara Chronicles, and co-created Netflix’s hit Wednesday with Tim Burton. Aside from TV, his film contributions include screenwriting or producing credits for Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, Spider‑Man 2, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and most recently Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Career highlights:

Gough’s breakout in television came with Smallville (2001–2011), co-created with Miles Millar. The series became the longest-running comic book–based show on The WB/CW. He then created Into the Badlands (2015–2019), a wuxia-inspired dystopian drama, and The Shannara Chronicles (2016–2018), a fantasy adaptation of Terry Brooks’s novels. In 2022, he co-created Wednesday, a Tim Burton–helmed Addams Family series that became Netflix’s most-streamed English-language show (1.7 billion hours), won four Emmys, and received multiple Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy nominations. His feature film works include collaborations on Lethal Weapon 4, Shanghai Noon/Knights, Spider‑Man 2, Mummy 3, Herbie, Hannah Montana, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In April 2024, he and Millar signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures under their Millar/Gough Ink banner
